The study explores the experiences of children and their parents regarding misinformation on social media, focusing on YouTube and TikTok. Children are particularly vulnerable to misinformation due to their developing cognitive and emotional abilities. The research combines a qualitative survey of 87 parents with semi-structured interviews of 12 families. Key findings include:
1. **Content Encountered**: Children often encounter deep fakes, political memes, and celebrity/influencer rumors.
2. **Parental Concerns**: Parents express significant concern about their children's exposure to misinformation, feeling responsible for teaching critical thinking skills.
3. **Educational Role**: Most parents believe schools should teach media literacy and critical thinking skills to help children navigate misinformation.
4. **Developmental Impact**: While most parents see negative impacts on children's development, some believe misinformation can foster critical thinking.
5. **Family Relationships**: Misinformation affects family relationships, especially with grandparents who may have different political views.
The study highlights the need for better education and parental guidance to protect children from misinformation and promote healthy digital citizenship. The study explores the experiences of children and their parents regarding misinformation on social media, focusing on YouTube and TikTok.
