This study explores the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within South Africa's higher education system. It examines the adoption of AI technologies in South African higher education institutions, the challenges faced, and potential future directions. The research employed a qualitative approach, using in-depth interviews and focused group discussions with lecturers from the Department of Information Sciences. The findings reveal that AI technology enhances student learning and engagement, promotes inclusive and interactive classroom environments, and supports personalized learning experiences. AI has the potential to improve educational outcomes, foster collaboration, and address disparities in access to quality education. However, challenges such as infrastructure limitations, skills gaps, and ethical concerns must be addressed to ensure responsible and equitable AI implementation. The study highlights the importance of developing comprehensive national AI education policies to guide the integration of AI in higher education. These policies should promote innovation, protect student rights, and ensure ethical AI use. The research underscores the transformative potential of AI in advancing SDGs, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), by improving access, inclusivity, and educational quality. It also emphasizes the need for collaboration between policymakers, educators, and industry stakeholders to ensure AI adoption aligns with South Africa's commitment to sustainable development.
