How reliable are measurement scales? External factors with indirect influence on reliability estimators

2015 | George Ursachi, Ioana Alexandra Horodnic, Adriana Zait*
The study investigates the impact of external factors on the reliability of measurement scales, specifically Cronbach Alpha, a widely used estimator in social and economic research. The authors use a bootstrapping technique to test the reliability of three scales commonly used in marketing research. They find that Cronbach Alpha values can vary significantly due to indirect influences from external factors such as respondents' age, gender, level of education, religiousness, living area, survey type, and relevance of the research subject to the participants. The results highlight potential reliability issues for some scales, especially in heterogeneous populations, and suggest the need for caution when using instruments with low reliability values. The study also emphasizes the importance of adapting instruments to specific populations and conducting supplementary reliability checks for heterogeneous samples. The study investigates the impact of external factors on the reliability of measurement scales, specifically Cronbach Alpha, a widely used estimator in social and economic research.
