Role of Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) as a Plant Growth Enhancer for Sustainable Agriculture: A Review

Role of Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) as a Plant Growth Enhancer for Sustainable Agriculture: A Review

1 April 2024 | Asma Hasan, Baby Tabassum, Mohammad Hashim, Nagma Khan
The article reviews the role of Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) in enhancing plant growth and sustainable agriculture. PGPR, found in the rhizosphere, play crucial roles in promoting plant growth through processes such as nitrogen fixation, phosphate solubilization, and hormone secretion. They also enhance plant tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses, reduce the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and improve nutrient availability and soil fertility. PGPR's multiple ecological and practical functions include increasing phytohormone synthesis, bioremediation, and controlling the production of hormones that increase root size and strength. The review highlights the benefits of PGPR in improving crop yield, reducing environmental pollution, and ensuring food security. The integration of PGPR with nanotechnology is discussed as a promising approach to enhance their efficacy and sustainability in agricultural practices. The article concludes that PGPR is a valuable tool for sustainable agriculture, offering potential for higher harvests with fewer chemical inputs. Further research is needed to fully explore the potential of PGPR and develop widespread applications. The article reviews the role of Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) in enhancing plant growth and sustainable agriculture.
