Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature for Reporting Clinical Data. Results of the First International Workshop

2005 September ; 140(3): 509–516 | THE STANDARDIZATION OF UVEITIS NOMENCLATURE (SUN) WORKING GROUP
The Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature (SUN) Working Group held its first international workshop in November 2004 to address the need for standardized methods in reporting clinical data for uveitis. The workshop aimed to enhance comparability and consistency in uveitis research by standardizing diagnostic criteria, inflammation grading, and outcome measures. Key outcomes included: 1. **Anatomic Classification**: Consensus was reached on using an anatomic classification of uveitis as a framework for diagnostic criteria, focusing on the location of inflammation rather than structural complications. 2. **Terminology**: Standardized terms were agreed upon for conditions such as "intermediate uveitis," "pars planitis," and "panuveitis." Descriptors for onset and course were also standardized. 3. **Inflammation Grading**: Standardized grading schemes were developed for anterior chamber cells, anterior chamber flare, and vitreous haze. These schemes aim to facilitate data comparison across different studies. 4. **Structural Complications**: Consensus was reached on how to report structural complications, including macular edema, epiretinal membrane formation, and neovascularization. 5. **Outcomes and Reporting**: Definitions for "inactive" inflammation, "improvement," "worsening," and "corticosteroid sparing" were established. Visual acuity outcomes were standardized, emphasizing the importance of using logarithmic charts for accurate reporting. The SUN Working Group's efforts are expected to enhance the precision and comparability of uveitis research, particularly in long-term studies and meta-analyses. The group advocates for the application of these standards in all uveitis studies initiated after the publication of this manuscript. The Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature (SUN) Working Group held its first international workshop in November 2004 to address the need for standardized methods in reporting clinical data for uveitis.
