Transformer Models in Healthcare: A Survey and Thematic Analysis of Potentials, Shortcomings and Risks

17 February 2024 | Kerstin Denecke, Richard May, Octavio Rivera-Romero
This study explores the potential, shortcomings, and risks of using transformer models in healthcare through a qualitative survey of 28 participants. The research identifies seven benefits, including improved operational efficiency, optimized processes, and refined clinical documentation. However, it also highlights significant concerns such as bias, auditability issues, and privacy risks. Challenges include the need for specialized expertise, ethical dilemmas, and the potential reduction in human involvement in patient care. The study emphasizes the importance of responsible design, ensuring transparency, maintaining system quality, and compliance with regulatory standards to mitigate these risks. The findings provide a foundation for developing sustainable and efficient healthcare solutions that leverage transformer models while minimizing potential negative impacts. This study explores the potential, shortcomings, and risks of using transformer models in healthcare through a qualitative survey of 28 participants.
