The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has updated the list of qualified presumption of safety (QPS) recommended microbiological agents intentionally added to food or feed, as notified to EFSA until March 2024. The update was conducted by the EFSA Panel on Biological Hazards (BIOHAZ) and included the evaluation of 83 microorganisms notified between October 2023 and March 2024. Of these, 75 notifications were not evaluated due to various reasons, including the exclusion of certain microorganisms from QPS evaluation and the re-evaluation of previously assessed TUs. Five new TUs were assessed for possible QPS status: Akkermansia muciniphila, Actinomadura roseiflua, Microbacterium arborescens, Rhizobium radiobacter (synonym Agrobacterium radiobacter), and Burkholderia stagnalis. The conclusions were as follows: - **Akkermansia muciniphila**: Not recommended for QPS status due to safety concerns. - **Actinomadura roseiflua**: Not recommended for QPS status due to safety concerns. - **Microbacterium arborescens**: Not recommended for QPS status due to lack of body of knowledge on its use in the food and feed chain. - **Rhizobium radiobacter (synonym Agrobacterium radiobacter)**: Recommended for QPS status with the qualification 'for production purposes only'. - **Burkholderia stagnalis**: Not included in the QPS list due to lack of body of knowledge and potential safety concerns. The update also involved verifying the correctness of names and completeness of synonyms for the TUs in the QPS list and establishing a new procedure to ensure that the TUs are kept up to date based on recent taxonomical insights. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has updated the list of qualified presumption of safety (QPS) recommended microbiological agents intentionally added to food or feed, as notified to EFSA until March 2024.
