A Comparison of Parenting Strategies in a Digital Environment: A Systematic Literature Review

2024 | Leonarda Banić and Tihomir Orehovački
A systematic literature review was conducted to explore parental strategies in a digital environment, focusing on how parents mediate their children's internet use. The study analyzed 49 studies from 11 databases, highlighting trends in parental mediation, content restrictions, and the role of parental computer literacy in children's online safety. Key findings indicate a shift towards more proactive parental involvement, with active mediation strategies gaining recognition alongside restrictive approaches. Parents often set rules to limit screen time, restrict access to violent content, and monitor online activities. The study also emphasizes the importance of parental computer literacy in ensuring children's online safety. While most parents are familiar with mediation practices, some do not implement them. The concept of "free-range parenting," which encourages independence and calculated risks, has gained attention. However, this approach is sometimes perceived as neglectful. The review also explores cultural variations in parental mediation, the long-term effects on child development, and the role of peer influence. The findings underscore the need for active parental involvement and the importance of enhancing parents' digital proficiency. Despite methodological and language heterogeneity among the studies, the research contributes valuable insights for practitioners and researchers in the field of digital parenting. The study highlights the challenges parents face in ensuring responsible and secure online engagement for their children.A systematic literature review was conducted to explore parental strategies in a digital environment, focusing on how parents mediate their children's internet use.
