ALTERNATE POSSIBILITIES AND MORAL RESPONSIBILITY

ALTERNATE POSSIBILITIES AND MORAL RESPONSIBILITY

| DONALD A. WELLS
The text presents two main sections. The first is a controversial argument advocating for the right of Aryans to wage a "war of extermination" against Jews, under specific conditions, and comparing it to the Nazi regime's actions. It argues that the concept of a "just war" is similar to a "just pogrom," and that the doctrine of alternate possibilities—where a person is morally responsible only if they could have done otherwise—is flawed. The second section is a philosophical analysis of the principle of alternate possibilities, challenging its validity by examining cases of coercion and moral responsibility. The author argues that a person may be morally responsible even if they could not have done otherwise, and that the principle of alternate possibilities is therefore incorrect. The text concludes that moral responsibility is not necessarily incompatible with determinism. The final section is a book review of a collection of Nietzsche's letters, noting that while the letters contain interesting insights, they are not as valuable as his published works. The text presents two main sections.
