Arsenic Contamination Needs Serious Attention: An Opinion and Global Scenario

Arsenic (As) contamination is a significant global issue, affecting water and soil resources and posing serious threats to public health and the environment. Nearly 106 countries are impacted by groundwater arsenic contamination, exposing an estimated 230 million people to adverse health effects, including increased cancer risks, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, skin lesions, neurological issues, kidney damage, and developmental complications. Arsenic is highly toxic and ranked among the top priorities for public health concern by the ATSDR and WHO. Regulatory standards, such as the maximum permissible level of 10 μg/L in drinking water, emphasize the urgency of addressing this problem. The article covers the global scenario of arsenic contamination, its sources, impacts, and mitigation strategies. It highlights the need for collaborative efforts involving regulatory bodies, legislative bodies, and development agencies to raise awareness, implement effective detection and mitigation technologies, and ensure access to safe drinking water for all.
