This study explores the text comprehension proficiency of Indonesian higher education students compared to the AI model ChatGPT, focusing on gender and university aspects. The research uses a quantitative method with descriptive statistical analysis, independent sample t-tests, and Welch One-Way ANOVA. The sample consists of 288 students from Makassar State University, Timor University, and Makassar Health Polytechnic. The results show that ChatGPT significantly outperforms students in reprocessing text across almost all assessed aspects. However, in the Multiple Choice Test (MCT) score, students from Makassar State University perform slightly better than ChatGPT and the other two universities. The Makassar Health Polytechnic students' scores are almost on par with ChatGPT, while the University of Timor's scores are significantly lower. The study contributes to developing the Indonesian curriculum by highlighting the need to revise and enhance educational content to improve text comprehension skills. Future research can further examine text comprehension in specific contexts and explore the broader social and ethical impacts of AI in language education. This study explores the text comprehension proficiency of Indonesian higher education students compared to the AI model ChatGPT, focusing on gender and university aspects.
