This study presents a global overview of bariatric surgery in 2013 based on data from the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Diseases (IFSO). A questionnaire was sent to 54 national bariatric societies, with 49 (90.7%) responding. Of these, 37 had national registries. The total number of bariatric procedures worldwide in 2013 was 468,609, 95.7% of which were laparoscopic. The USA/Canada region had the highest number of procedures (154,276). The most common procedures were Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (45%), sleeve gastrectomy (37%), and adjustable gastric banding (10%). There was a significant increase in sleeve gastrectomy from 0 to 37% of the world total between 2003 and 2013, while adjustable gastric banding decreased by 68% from its peak in 2008 to 2013. Sleeve gastrectomy was the most frequently performed procedure in the USA/Canada and Asia/Pacific regions, while Roux-en-Y gastric bypass was the most common in Europe and Latin/South America. The accuracy of the survey could be improved if each nation or national group established a national registry. Bariatric surgery is considered the most effective treatment for morbid obesity, leading to better weight loss and comorbidity outcomes compared to nonsurgical interventions. The study highlights the evolving trends in bariatric surgery over the past decade, emphasizing the importance of periodic assessments for the surgical community, patients, and healthcare providers. This study presents a global overview of bariatric surgery in 2013 based on data from the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Diseases (IFSO).
