This article provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of academic research on the benefits and concerns of artificial intelligence (AI) in everyday life. It offers guidance for stakeholders in establishing governance practices for responsible AI to ensure the future of smart societies is safe, inclusive, and sustainable. The synthesis of literature connects various academic disciplines and concludes with a theoretical framework for responsible AI in a multi-stakeholder arrangement. Two key discussions are presented: one on the ethical considerations of AI governance and another on the need for a multi-stakeholder approach for responsible AI adoption. AI rapidly transforms various aspects of life, influencing communication, information access, work, and decision-making. While AI offers substantial benefits, it raises ethical, legal, and social concerns, including bias in algorithms and job market impacts. Ensuring responsible AI use involves balancing stakeholder interests and adopting AI responsibly. AI adoption transforms daily routines and societal structures, requiring research to establish causal relationships between stakeholder interests, behaviors, and AI adoption outcomes. A multi-stakeholder theoretical framework is introduced, extending Freeman's Stakeholder Theory to AI adoption. This framework highlights the causal relationship between stakeholder interests and AI impacts. The framework categorizes stakeholders into AI supply chain actors, AI users, and AI regulators and governance actors. The impacts of AI include benefits and concerns, with benefits categorized into growth and profits, performance, ease, and convenience, safety, and sustainability. Concerns include trust, ethical issues, and disruption of social and organizational culture. The article emphasizes the need for a multi-stakeholder approach to address AI's societal impacts. It discusses the psychological concept of 'ego' and its influence on AI adoption, as well as the responsibility of stakeholders in ensuring ethical and safe AI development.
