Creation of Favorable User Perceptions: Exploring the Role of Intrinsic Motivation

June 1999 | Viswanath Venkatesh, Robert H. Smith
This research explores the role of intrinsic motivation in creating favorable user perceptions of new technologies, particularly through training methods. Two studies were conducted to compare traditional training with a game-based training (GBT) method that incorporates intrinsic motivation. The results showed that GBT significantly enhanced perceived ease of use and behavioral intention to use compared to traditional training. Key findings include higher perceived ease of use and behavioral intention to use among users in GBT, equivalent perceived usefulness between the two training methods, and a stronger influence of perceived ease of use on behavioral intention in GBT. The study challenges the traditional TAM hypothesis by showing that intrinsic motivation can enhance the effect of perceived ease of use on behavioral intention. The research highlights the importance of incorporating intrinsic motivation, such as playfulness, in training to improve user acceptance and usage of technology. The findings suggest that game-based training is more effective in fostering favorable user perceptions and behavioral intentions compared to traditional training methods. This research explores the role of intrinsic motivation in creating favorable user perceptions of new technologies, particularly through training methods.
