This paper describes the development and evaluation of GUIDE, an intelligent electronic tourist guide designed to overcome the limitations of traditional information and navigation tools for city visitors. The system integrates mobile computing technologies, wireless infrastructure, context-awareness, and adaptive hypermedia to provide personalized and context-sensitive information. Key requirements included flexibility, context-sensitive information, dynamic content support, and interactive services. The GUIDE system was evaluated through expert walkthroughs and field trials, revealing high user acceptance but also highlighting the need for better control over functionality and form factors. Future work aims to enhance the system with low-power wireless technologies and explore persistent visitor profiles.
