16 April 2024 | Laila Mohebi
This systematic literature review explores the integration of ChatGPT in academic settings, highlighting its potential, challenges, and opportunities. The review analyzed 32 peer-reviewed articles published in 2023, focusing on ChatGPT's applications, challenges, and impact on pedagogical practices. The findings reveal that ChatGPT is widely recognized for its potential to enhance personalized learning, improve content creation, and support diverse learning needs. However, significant challenges include pedagogical integration, student engagement, and ethical concerns such as bias and data privacy. The review emphasizes that ChatGPT's integration into higher education is most prevalent, with 75% of studies focusing on this area. While ChatGPT offers opportunities for collaborative learning and enhanced student engagement, its implementation requires careful consideration of ethical and pedagogical factors. The study also identifies the need for educator training and preparedness to effectively utilize ChatGPT in academic settings. Key factors driving the adoption of ChatGPT include efficient content creation, personalized learning, and support for diverse learning needs. However, challenges such as ethical considerations, bias, and the need for proper training remain critical. The review calls for a balanced approach that leverages ChatGPT's potential while addressing its limitations to ensure its effective integration into academic environments. The study concludes that ChatGPT has the potential to transform educational practices, but its successful implementation requires a thoughtful and systematic approach. Future research should focus on long-term effects, ethical implications, and strategies for effective integration. The findings underscore the importance of addressing both the opportunities and challenges associated with ChatGPT to maximize its benefits in academic settings. This systematic literature review explores the integration of ChatGPT in academic settings, highlighting its potential, challenges, and opportunities.
