Entrez Gene: gene-centered information at NCBI

Entrez Gene: gene-centered information at NCBI

2006 | Donna Maglott, Jim Ostell, Kim D. Pruitt and Tatiana Tatusova
Entrez Gene is a database at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) that provides gene-specific information. It includes records from completely sequenced genomes, those with active research communities, and those scheduled for intense sequence analysis. The content is derived from curation and automated integration of data from NCBI's Reference Sequence project (RefSeq), collaborating model organism databases, and other NCBI databases. Each record is assigned a unique, stable, and tracked integer identifier (GeneID). Information includes nomenclature, map location, gene products, markers, phenotypes, citations, sequences, variation details, maps, expression, homologs, protein domains, and external databases. This information is accessible via interactive browsing, NCBI's Entrez programming utilities (E-Utilities), and bulk transfer via FTP. Entrez Gene is integrated with the Entrez system for interactive queries and provides links to external databases. It serves as a central resource for gene-specific information, used by other NCBI resources such as BLAST, dbSNP, GEO, HomoloGene, Map Viewer, Probe, UniGene, UniSTS, and the genome annotation pipeline. The database provides tracked, unique identifiers for genes and loci across multiple genomes. GeneIDs are species-specific and are reported in RefSeq records. The database includes statistics, such as over 2 million current records in 3500+ taxa as of September 2006. The database content includes gene-specific information such as GeneRIFs, which provide annotated bibliographies of gene functions, discoveries, and mappings. The database also provides links to external databases and tools, and allows users to customize their display and receive notifications about updates. Feedback is welcomed, and the database is supported by NIH.Entrez Gene is a database at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) that provides gene-specific information.
