Generative AI: is it a paradigm shift for higher education?

22 Mar 2024 | Xianghan O'Dea
This special issue of *Studies in Higher Education* explores the opportunities and challenges of using Generative AI (GenAI), particularly text generators, in higher education. The introduction provides an overview of AI and GenAI, highlighting the gap in research and framing the issue. It discusses the rapid adoption of GenAI, such as ChatGPT, and its potential benefits and ethical concerns. The issue includes five original research papers from various country contexts, focusing on learning and teaching, social support, and psychological well-being. The papers reveal positive perceptions of GenAI tools among students and staff, but also raise concerns about academic integrity and the potential for increased loneliness due to reduced human interaction. The special issue aims to serve as a valuable resource for stakeholders in higher education, encouraging further research and informed policy-making. However, the author reflects that more empirical studies are needed, especially on institutional policies and the ethical use of GenAI.This special issue of *Studies in Higher Education* explores the opportunities and challenges of using Generative AI (GenAI), particularly text generators, in higher education.
