The GAIED (pronounced "guide") workshop at NeurIPS 2023 aimed to bring together researchers, educators, and practitioners to explore the potential of generative AI in education. The workshop focused on two main thrusts: GAI→ED, which explores how generative AI can improve educational technology, and ED→GAI, which identifies challenges in education caused by generative AI and how to address them. The workshop included invited talks, a panel session, and contributed papers. Topics covered included personalized learning, ethical considerations, and the impact of generative AI on education. The workshop emphasized the need for a multilingual community with expertise in generative AI, classroom experience, and educational technology. Key research directions included emerging curricula, diversity and equity, and metrics for evaluating AI's impact on education. The workshop highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the need for ongoing research to address the challenges and opportunities presented by generative AI in education. The GAIED (pronounced "guide") workshop at NeurIPS 2023 aimed to bring together researchers, educators, and practitioners to explore the potential of generative AI in education.
