Global Illness and Deaths Caused by Rotavirus Disease in Children

2010 | CDC
Appendix B contains country-specific estimates of deaths from diarrhea and rotavirus in children. The estimates for diarrhea deaths were calculated by multiplying the total number of deaths in children under 5 years of age by the estimated proportion of deaths attributable to diarrhea, based on GNP per capita. The proportions varied depending on the GNP per capita: 21% for GNP less than $756, 17% for GNP between $756 and $2,995, 9% for GNP between $2,995 and $9,625, and 1% for GNP greater than $9,625. The estimates for rotavirus deaths were calculated by multiplying the total number of diarrhea deaths in children under 5 years of age by the estimated proportion of diarrhea deaths attributable to rotavirus, also based on GNP per capita. The proportions varied as follows: 20% for GNP less than $756, 25% for GNP between $756 and $2,995, 31% for GNP between $2,995 and $9,625, and 34% for GNP greater than $9,625. These estimates are provided in a table that is available online.Appendix B contains country-specific estimates of deaths from diarrhea and rotavirus in children.
