The TARCiS statement provides guidance on terminology, application, and reporting of citation searching in systematic literature searches. It was developed through a four-round Delphi consensus study involving 27 international methodological experts. The statement includes 10 specific recommendations on when and how to conduct and report citation searching, along with four research priorities. Citation searching is a search technique that identifies relevant sources by examining citation relationships. It is commonly used in systematic reviews, particularly in Cochrane reviews, where backward citation searching (checking references cited by seed references) is mandatory. Forward citation searching (assessing articles that cite seed references) is also used. Indirect methods include co-citing and co-cited citation searching. The TARCiS statement aims to standardize terminology, application, and reporting of citation searching to improve transparency, reproducibility, and comparability of systematic reviews. It also addresses the need for further research on the effectiveness and applicability of citation searching methods. The statement includes detailed recommendations on terminology, conduct, and reporting of citation searching, as well as research priorities for future methodological development. The TARCiS checklist is available for download to assist in the reporting of citation searching. The statement emphasizes the importance of clear reporting of citation searching methods, including seed references, directionality of searching, dates of searching, number of iterations, citation indexes used, and deduplication processes. It also highlights the need for further research on the value of citation searching, optimal methods for conducting citation searching, and the reproducibility of citation searching. The TARCiS statement is intended to be used by researchers, systematic reviewers, information specialists, librarians, editors, and others involved in citation searching or assessing citation searching methods. The statement is available on the TARCiS website and is intended to be disseminated through various platforms to enhance its use and awareness. The TARCiS statement provides guidance on terminology, application, and reporting of citation searching in systematic literature searches.
