HealMe is a novel large language model (LLM) designed for cognitive reframing in psychotherapy. It addresses the limitations of previous LLMs in psychotherapy by focusing on empowering clients rather than relying on therapist-driven solutions. HealMe employs empathetic dialogue based on psychotherapeutic frameworks, systematically guiding clients through distinguishing situations from feelings, brainstorming alternative perspectives, and developing empathetic, actionable suggestions. The model uses a comprehensive set of psychological evaluation metrics to assess its performance in both AI-simulated dialogues and real-world therapeutic conversations.
HealMe operates in three stages: 1) distinguishing between situations and thoughts for a rational outlook, 2) brainstorming for alternative perspectives to mitigate negative thinking, and 3) offering suggestions that acknowledge the client's effort and encourage positive action. The model is trained using dialogue data imbued with empathy and guidance, ensuring empathetic and directive responses. It is evaluated using three criteria: empathy, logical coherence, and guidance, with results showing that HealMe outperforms other models in these areas.
The model was tested against baselines such as ChatGLM3-6b and LLaMA2-7b-chat, and demonstrated superior performance in empathy, guidance, and logical coherence. In real-world scenarios, some clients using HealMe experienced notable decreases in negative emotional attributes, with negative scores dropping from 5/5 to 1/5. The model's contributions include introducing an AI psychotherapy model that effectively implements cognitive reframing therapy, proposing comprehensive professional AI psychotherapy evaluation metrics, and conducting extensive comparative analyses of its approach against other LLMs.
HealMe's approach emphasizes the client's self-discovery and rational thought processes, rather than direct guidance from therapists. It is designed to foster a more collaborative environment, allowing clients to explore and understand their thoughts and feelings, leading to more sustainable and self-directed change. The model's effectiveness is supported by experimental results showing its superiority in both AI-to-AI conversations and real-world dialogues. The study also highlights the importance of empathy and guidance in psychotherapy, and the potential of AI to develop more advanced and specialized psychotherapeutic strategies.HealMe is a novel large language model (LLM) designed for cognitive reframing in psychotherapy.
