Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) is transforming journalism by enhancing efficiency in news production, content creation, and audience engagement. This study explores the development, application, and ethical challenges of GAI in journalism. GAI, which includes technologies like natural language processing and large pre-trained models, is used to automate tasks such as information gathering, content production, and customization. It enables faster and more efficient news production, allowing journalists to focus on critical tasks like fact-checking. However, the integration of GAI raises ethical concerns, including the potential erosion of journalistic professionalism, the risk of bias, and the impact on media accuracy and audience trust. The study identifies three main applications of GAI in journalism: GAI tools, platforms, and systems. GAI tools allow journalists to access AI for content creation, while GAI platforms facilitate collaboration between humans and machines. GAI systems are tailored to specific media organizations, embedding their values into the technology. These applications have transformed news production, making it more automated and data-driven. However, they also pose challenges, such as the potential for biased information gathering and the risk of misinformation. Ethically, GAI raises concerns about the role of human subjectivity in journalism, the credibility of AI-generated content, and the value orientation of news. The use of GAI may lead to a shift in news values towards power and influence, as those with technological resources determine what is newsworthy. Additionally, the integration of GAI in news production raises legal issues, including privacy violations and copyright concerns. To address these challenges, the study recommends that news organizations, journalists, and audiences work together to ensure responsible use of GAI. This includes developing ethical guidelines, enhancing media literacy, and maintaining journalistic integrity. The study emphasizes the need for a balanced approach that leverages the benefits of GAI while mitigating its risks, ensuring that journalism remains a trusted and ethical profession.Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) is transforming journalism by enhancing efficiency in news production, content creation, and audience engagement.
