The Arab World English Journal (AWEJ) published a special issue on ChatGPT in April 2024, focusing on its impact on academic writing at Moroccan universities. The study, led by Khairi Al-Zubaidi, Mohamed Jaafari, and Fatima Zahra Touzani, surveyed 180 university students and educators to assess their perceptions of ChatGPT's role in academic writing. The findings revealed that while ChatGPT is seen as a valuable tool for reducing time and work, answering questions, providing feedback, and improving writing skills, it also poses risks such as plagiarism, lack of originality, and over-reliance on the tool. Students and educators expressed concerns about the tool's limitations, including its inability to understand sarcasm, irony, and current events, as well as its lack of human touch and potential for generating inaccurate or misleading information. The study also highlighted the need for ethical guidelines and training to ensure responsible use of ChatGPT in academic settings. Despite these challenges, the researchers noted that ChatGPT can significantly enhance academic writing when used appropriately. The study underscores the importance of balancing the benefits of AI tools with the need for critical thinking and originality in academic work. The Arab World English Journal (AWEJ) published a special issue on ChatGPT in April 2024, focusing on its impact on academic writing at Moroccan universities.
