Vitamin D deficiency is a significant global public health issue affecting all age groups, including those in low-latitude countries and industrialized nations where fortification programs have been implemented. However, many countries lack representative data, particularly for infants, children, adolescents, and pregnant women. A systematic review of recent literature identified 103 articles on vitamin D status worldwide, published over the last decade. Maps were created to illustrate the prevalence of low vitamin D status by age group, showing that the Middle East has the highest prevalence, especially among girls and women. The review highlights the lack of data in South America and Africa, and suggests that factors such as skin melanin content, limited sun exposure, low intake, and high obesity rates contribute to the problem. Seasonal variations are less significant compared to other factors. The study concludes that vitamin D deficiency is a global issue, particularly in the Middle East.Vitamin D deficiency is a significant global public health issue affecting all age groups, including those in low-latitude countries and industrialized nations where fortification programs have been implemented.
