Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS) is one of the three major general primary astronomical research journals published by the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS), an international organization based in the UK. The RAS is a charity that promotes astronomy and geophysics through research dissemination, meetings, and publications. It publishes three journals: MNRAS, Geophysical Journal International (GJI), and Astronomy & Geophysics (A&G). MNRAS, established in 1827, originally contained notices and announcements from RAS meetings and reports on astronomical phenomena. It now publishes original research in astronomy, including positional and dynamical astronomy, astrophysics, radio astronomy, cosmology, space research, and instrument design. MNRAS also publishes 'Letters'—short, topical articles that are now entirely electronic. Previously, these were published on pink paper, but this format was discontinued in 2005 to align with preprint servers and ADS. A paper archive is being considered for libraries.
MNRAS is available in both paper and electronic formats, primarily to research institutions and universities. In 2004, MNRAS was available in over 2,200 institutions, with most subscribers having online access. About 20% of institutional subscribers receive the print edition. The trend in subscriptions has plateaued or increased slightly in 2004. MNRAS is also available to individuals, free of charge to RAS members. The journals are also available to the public through electronic means.Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS) is one of the three major general primary astronomical research journals published by the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS), an international organization based in the UK.
