The article reviews the initial pilot studies of metaverse-related technologies in psychiatric patients and discusses their potential for treating mental disorders. The metaverse, a blend of the physical and digital worlds, offers a shared virtual space where users can interact with each other and the environment in ways that mimic real-world interactions. Key technologies include mixed reality (MR), augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), and blockchain. These technologies enable the creation of controlled, safe, and customizable therapeutic environments, which can be tailored to individual needs and conditions. The metaverse's ability to create synchronized brain activity and social interactions makes it particularly useful for treating conditions like sexual dysfunctions, autism spectrum disorders, and eating disorders. For instance, an avatar-based sexual therapy program in the metaverse has shown effectiveness in treating female orgasm disorders, and a metaverse-based social skills training program has improved social interaction abilities in children with autism spectrum disorders. However, the metaverse also presents challenges such as identity confusion, social isolation, cyberbullying, and addictive behaviors. Future research should address these challenges and develop more advanced methods to fully leverage the metaverse's potential in mental health. The article reviews the initial pilot studies of metaverse-related technologies in psychiatric patients and discusses their potential for treating mental disorders.
