The NCBI BLAST web interface has been redesigned to improve usability and performance. The new interface includes simplified search forms, improved navigation, a list of recent BLAST results, saved search strategies, and a documentation directory. The redesign replaces the old forms and navigation pages with an integrated web application that addresses usability concerns.
The new BLAST interface has a consistent design and structure. Each page has a header with links to the NCBI home page and a sign-in box for My NCBI. Breadcrumbs show the current page's location and provide navigation. Tabs provide access to main application pages, including Home, Saved Strategies, Recent Results, and Help. When a new job is initiated, the Job Running page reports the status and estimated completion time. Formatting parameters can be changed on the Format Control page as the job runs. Once the job completes, the BLAST Report is presented, allowing users to reformat, resubmit, or navigate to other pages.
The Home page provides links to various BLAST form types and describes the five general BLAST form types. The BLAST form allows users to enter query sequences, either by accession or gi number, or as IUPAC sequence in FASTA format. The Choose Search Set section selects the BLAST database and applies limiting criteria. The Program Selection section selects the algorithm for search and alignment. The new Job Title appears in Saved Strategies, Recent Results, and the top of every BLAST report.
The Job Running page reports job statistics and provides an estimate of completion time. The Format Control page specifies formatting parameters for a specific BLAST job. The Report page provides a summary of the results, including links to alternate report formats, a graphical overview of the results, descriptions of the sequences, and alignments of the HSPs. The Recent Results page displays a list of unexpired BLAST jobs for the current browser session. Saved Strategies allow users to save search strategies for later use.
Future directions include better integration of more BLAST databases, more reporting options, support for batch and interactive operations, better formatting control, and improved interpretation of discovery. The BLAST team is interested in how users apply BLAST to their daily work and encourages input. The research was supported by the Intramural Research Program of the NIH, National Library of Medicine. The NCBI BLAST web interface has been redesigned to improve usability and performance.
