This review article compares oil spill response strategies in the United States and Nigeria, analyzing their effectiveness, challenges, and policy frameworks. The U.S. has a robust, technologically advanced, and well-coordinated response system, supported by stringent regulations and significant investment in research. This enables rapid containment and mitigation of spills, minimizing environmental and socioeconomic impacts. Nigeria, however, faces challenges such as regulatory loopholes, inadequate enforcement, and limited technological resources, which exacerbate the consequences of oil spills on the environment and local communities. Key findings emphasize the importance of governance, technological readiness, and stakeholder collaboration in effective response strategies. The analysis highlights critical gaps in Nigeria's framework and suggests improvements like stronger legislation, enhanced technology, and international collaboration. The paper advocates for policy reforms and strategic investments in Nigeria to improve its response capabilities, drawing on the U.S. experience to promote a holistic approach integrating advanced technologies, effective governance, and community engagement.
