Plastic Deformation of Metals

Plastic Deformation of Metals

May 14, 1932 | Dr. F. Körber
A fire on Christmas Eve destroyed the main library of the University of the Witwatersrand, along with the Gubbins collection and the Law Library, causing significant loss. Although replacements for damaged books have been made, a meeting was held to raise funds for restoration. Lord Athlone, an honorary graduate of the university, presided over the meeting, which highlighted the university's growth and the importance of its library. A committee was formed to coordinate British efforts for rebuilding the library, with a target of £60,000. The loss included manuscripts, books, prints, and various scientific journals and departmental libraries. The goal is to build a fireproof library and restock it with books and other materials. While original documents cannot be replaced, other collections are hoped to be donated. The appeal committee will seek donations, with contact details provided. Dr. F. Körber discussed the plastic deformation of metals in a lecture, examining stress relationships and deformation processes in mechanical shaping. His research included analyzing stress distribution and internal losses during deformation. In Northern Ireland, a water power station on the River Bann was considered, but it was temporarily suspended due to land drainage issues. A steam power station in Larne is connected to a transmission line for future connection to the Bann River. The electricity will mainly support the linen industry, along with paper mills and cement works.A fire on Christmas Eve destroyed the main library of the University of the Witwatersrand, along with the Gubbins collection and the Law Library, causing significant loss.
