Accepted: 11 January 2024 / Published online: 29 January 2024 | Alexios Brailas
This article explores the evolving capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies through a postdigital duoethnography, a methodological framework that combines qualitative and post-qualitative research methods. The author engages in a dialogue with ChatGPT, an AI language model, to discuss topics such as knowledge production, research methods, epistemology, creativity, entropy, and self-organization. By reflecting on their lived experience during this dialogue, the author examines how human-AI synergies can facilitate new insights and amplify human creative potential. The article emphasizes the critical challenge of understanding the impact of technology on individuals and communities in an era where the postdigital is becoming dominant in science and education. It introduces the concept of a postdigital duoethnography, a method that involves a deep dialogical inquiry between a human and an AI algorithm, focusing on the differences and similarities in their experiences. The author argues that the combination of human and AI can lead to a nomadic posthuman subject capable of producing innovation and novelty, while also highlighting the importance of critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and adaptability in navigating the complex technosocial landscape. The article concludes by discussing the potential for a nomadic, self-organized postdigital intelligence and the need for collective action to address the challenges posed by this new reality. This article explores the evolving capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies through a postdigital duoethnography, a methodological framework that combines qualitative and post-qualitative research methods.
