SMART 7 is an updated version of the protein domain annotation resource, offering enhanced features and a more efficient user interface. It includes 1009 manually curated protein domains, an increase of 200 from the previous version. The database has been significantly expanded, with 1133 completely sequenced genomes now included. Users can now export and visualize domain architecture analysis results using iTOL, a phylogenetic tree viewer. A new subresource, 'metaSMART', allows exploration of domain architectures in metagenomics datasets, providing insights into domain variability across different environments. The database now includes over 11 million proteins from 150,000 species, with a streamlined genomic analysis mode. The protein interaction data has been updated to include information on over 3.5 million proteins. The backend of SMART is a PostgreSQL-based database, storing annotations and pre-calculated protein analyses. The user interface has been improved with a simplified layout and a new full-text search engine. Programmatic access has been extended with a text-only output mode. The database and web server have been optimized for performance, with hardware upgrades and code optimizations. SMART 7 is a valuable resource for domain annotation and analysis, with a focus on improving user experience and expanding the scope of protein domain research.SMART 7 is an updated version of the protein domain annotation resource, offering enhanced features and a more efficient user interface.
