SMART 7: recent updates to the protein domain annotation resource

SMART 7: recent updates to the protein domain annotation resource

Published online 3 November 2011 | Ivica Letunic, Tobias Doerks and Peer Bork*
SMART (Simple Modular Architecture Research Tool) has released version 7, which includes 1009 manually curated protein domains, an increase of 200 from the previous version. This update introduces several new features and a streamlined user interface for a faster and more user-friendly experience. The underlying protein databases have been significantly expanded, increasing the number of annotated domains and features by 2-fold. The database now includes 1133 completely sequenced genomes, up from 630 in the previous release. Domain architecture analysis results can be exported and visualized using the iTOL phylogenetic tree viewer. A new subresource, 'metaSMART,' is introduced for exploring and analyzing domain architectures in metagenomics data sets. An advanced full-text search engine has been implemented, covering complete annotations for SMART and Pfam domains, as well as protein descriptions, allowing users to quickly find relevant information. The database and web server have been optimized for better performance, and the user interface has been simplified and improved for easier navigation.SMART (Simple Modular Architecture Research Tool) has released version 7, which includes 1009 manually curated protein domains, an increase of 200 from the previous version.
