Software survey: VOSviewer, a computer program for bibliometric mapping

The paper introduces VOSviewer, a freely available computer program designed for constructing and viewing bibliometric maps. Unlike other programs like SPSS and Pajek, VOSviewer places special emphasis on the graphical representation of these maps, making it particularly useful for displaying large maps in an interpretable manner. The program supports various types of maps, including distance-based and graph-based, and can handle maps with thousands of items. VOSviewer uses the VOS mapping technique, which minimizes a weighted sum of squared Euclidean distances to position items in a two-dimensional space. The paper discusses the technical implementation of specific features, such as the density view and cluster density view, and demonstrates VOSviewer's ability to handle large maps by constructing and displaying a co-citation map of 5,000 major scientific journals. The authors conclude that VOSviewer is a valuable tool for bibliometric mapping, offering enhanced visualization capabilities compared to existing software. The paper introduces VOSviewer, a freely available computer program designed for constructing and viewing bibliometric maps.
