The study explores students' awareness and perception of sustainable development (SD) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Saudi universities. Using an online survey, the research aims to measure students' understanding of SD concepts, their engagement with sustainability practices, and the effectiveness of current educational approaches in fostering SD awareness. The study also investigates the correlation between students' academic disciplines and their understanding of sustainability, as well as the role of extracurricular activities.
Key findings include:
- Most respondents were from Prince Sultan University, with a majority being female.
- Sustainability was primarily associated with environmental indicators, while social and economic aspects were less emphasized.
- Most respondents considered all SDGs essential, except for Gender Equality.
- Recycling facilities were seen as critical, while energy and waste facilities were less so.
- University facilities, teaching, research, and extracurricular activities significantly impact SDG awareness.
- Ecology hostels/houses and student organizations focused on sustainability positively influenced SDG awareness.
- Sustainability pillars—environmental, economic, social, and cultural—were significantly associated with SDG awareness, with environmental aspects being the most influential.
The study suggests that green universities like Prince Sultan University play a crucial role in promoting sustainable development and environmental awareness. However, it also highlights the need for more diverse and comprehensive approaches to integrate sustainability across all aspects of higher education. The study explores students' awareness and perception of sustainable development (SD) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Saudi universities.
