This volume is a compilation of selected papers presented at the biannual meeting of the Classification and Data Analysis Group of the Società Italiana di Statistica, held in Rome on July 5-6, 1999. The papers were reviewed and selected from a pool of 75 submissions, covering a wide range of topics in classification and data analysis. The content is organized into four main parts:
1. **Classification and Multidimensional Scaling**: This section includes papers on cluster analysis, discriminant analysis, proximity structures analysis, and multidimensional scaling, as well as genetic algorithms and neural networks.
2. **Multivariate Data Analysis**: This part covers factorial methods, textual data analysis, regression models, and nonparametric methods.
3. **Spatial and Time Series Data Analysis**: It includes studies on time series analysis and spatial data analysis.
4. **Case Studies**: This section features practical applications and case studies in various fields such as economics, quality control, environmental science, and medical science.
The editors acknowledge the contributions of the authors, reviewers, and the local organizing committee, as well as the support from the National Research Council (CNR) and Springer-Verlag. The book aims to provide a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in classification and data analysis, reflecting the diverse and cutting-edge research in these fields. This volume is a compilation of selected papers presented at the biannual meeting of the Classification and Data Analysis Group of the Società Italiana di Statistica, held in Rome on July 5-6, 1999.
