This study explores the role of tactical situations and playing styles as key performance indicators (KPIs) in soccer, analyzing how specific tactical approaches influence match outcomes. Using a dataset of all First Division Championship matches from 11 European countries in the 2021–2022 season, the research examines the relationship between tactical situations and match results. A Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) framework was employed to analyze the data, with a binomial distribution and logit link function. The study found that possession style, counterattacks during offensive transitions, and a balanced aggressive defensive strategy significantly increase a team's chances of winning. Successful teams tend to focus on central attacks, minimize crossing, and execute strategic plays that lead to final attempts on goal with minimal ball possession. The findings highlight the importance of integrating tactical aspects as KPIs in performance analysis, offering a comprehensive framework for tactical planning and in-game strategy. The study also identifies that teams that adopt specific playing styles in various tactical situations and phases of the game can significantly influence match outcomes. The research underscores the need for coaches and analysts to prioritize tactical nuances in their strategies, emphasizing the importance of ball control, swift transitions from defense to attack, and effective defensive play. The study contributes to the literature by providing one of the most comprehensive analyses of tactical KPIs in football, demonstrating the significant role of tactical situations in match outcomes. The findings suggest that tactical approaches should be considered as critical factors in performance analysis, leading to more strategic gameplay and increased chances of victory. The study also highlights the importance of considering contextual factors, such as match location, opponent strength, and match dynamics, in evaluating the effectiveness of tactical approaches. The research provides practical insights for coaches and analysts, emphasizing the need for tailored strategies that consider a team's strengths and the opposition's tactical setup. The study also acknowledges limitations, including the reliance on specific datasets and the static nature of the analytical approach, which may not capture the fluid dynamics of football matches. Overall, the study contributes to the understanding of how tactical situations and playing styles influence soccer match outcomes, offering valuable insights for performance analysis and tactical planning. This study explores the role of tactical situations and playing styles as key performance indicators (KPIs) in soccer, analyzing how specific tactical approaches influence match outcomes.
