THE FLORA OF CHINA

THE FLORA OF CHINA

Nov. 14, 1889 | Dr. C. J. de Maximowicz, Dr. Augustine Henry, M. Franchet, Baron Richthofen
The island of Cyprus is characterized by two mountain ranges running parallel from east to west. The northern range extends from Cape Kormakiti to Cape St. Andrea, with the Kyrenia range being the westernmost and highest, reaching 3340 feet. This range is picturesque and rugged, with peaks like Kornos, Buffavento, and Pentedaktylos. A stream flows from Pentedaktylos, providing water for irrigation. The southern range is much larger, with Santa Croce as its easternmost point and Mount Troodos as the highest peak at 6406 feet. The southern range has numerous spurs and is home to forests and the moutflon. The Mesaorea plain, between the two ranges, is fertile and has rivers that contribute to its rich soil. The plain is supplied with water via aqueducts, and the forest question is closely linked to water supply. The flora of China has been studied, with new species added to the "Index Flora Sinensis." Botanists from various countries have contributed to this work, and the Committee of the Royal Society is independent and well-funded. The American Journal of Science discusses normal faults, assuming the earth's crust floats on a liquid layer. The island of Cyprus is characterized by two mountain ranges running parallel from east to west.
