The 1961 Corday Morgan Medal and Prize was awarded to Prof. F. Sondheimer for his contributions to the chemistry of natural products, including his synthesis of steroidal sapogenins and studies on unsaturated steroidic compounds.

During the report stage of the Water Resources Bill in the House of Lords, amendments were discussed to protect the amenity interests of the Lake District. Lord Henley proposed an amendment for a Lakeland River Authority, which was strongly supported by several bishops and peers. Earl Jellicoe, representing the government, reassured the House that the government was aware of the importance of protecting amenity interests and that the Bill included provisions to ensure this, such as the appointment of an amenity member to the Water Resources Board and the involvement of National Park Planning Authorities. He emphasized that these measures would ensure that amenity considerations were always taken into account in the river authorities' work.
A Working Party on Materials Science and Technology has been formed under the Institution of Chemical Engineers.
