The KOF Globalisation Index, a composite measure of globalization across economic, social, and political dimensions, has been revised to better capture de facto and de jure aspects of globalization. The revised index includes 43 variables instead of 23, disentangles trade and financial globalization, and allows for time-varying weights. It distinguishes between de facto (actual flows and activities) and de jure (policies and conditions enabling flows) measures of globalization. The index is used to examine the impact of globalization on economic growth, revealing that de facto and de jure globalization influence growth differently. The revised index also broadens cultural globalization and incorporates new variables, including those measuring de jure characteristics. The index is calculated using principal components analysis with time-varying weights and normalizes data to a 0-100 scale. Comparisons between the 2018 and 2007 versions show similar trends in globalization, with the 2018 version reflecting higher levels of social and economic globalization. The de facto and de jure dimensions of globalization show divergent developments, with de jure globalization growing faster in recent years. The revised index provides a more nuanced understanding of globalization, allowing researchers to explore its effects on economic growth and other areas. The index is available for download and is widely used in academic research. The KOF Globalisation Index, a composite measure of globalization across economic, social, and political dimensions, has been revised to better capture de facto and de jure aspects of globalization.
