The SCARE 2023 guidelines aim to update the Surgical Case Report (SCARE) guidelines, first published in 2016, to reflect current best practices and standards in surgery. These guidelines were developed to improve the quality and consistency of surgical case reports, making them more valuable for clinicians and researchers. The updated guidelines were produced through a Delphi consensus exercise involving 44 participants (81.5% of those invited), with 36 items (83.7%) meeting the threshold for inclusion. The revised guidelines include sections on introduction, patient information, diagnostic assessment, intervention, and follow-up outcomes, with specific recommendations and examples to guide authors. The guidelines also incorporate amendments to the reporting of surgical procedures, including postoperative instructions, the physical setting of the intervention, and speciality collaborations. Additionally, the revised guidelines include a separate strengths and limitations section. The updated SCARE 2023 guidelines provide a comprehensive and up-to-date tool for documenting and reporting surgical cases, emphasizing the importance of patient-centered care. Authors are encouraged to cite the guidelines and upload a completed checklist for reviewers and editors to inspect. The guidelines aim to improve the completeness and quality of surgical case reports, making them more useful for clinicians and researchers. The revised guidelines also address the importance of patient privacy, consent, ethical considerations, and the need for clear and concise reporting of surgical procedures and outcomes. Adhering to these guidelines will help contribute to the advancement of surgical knowledge and practice. The guidelines are available on the SCARE website (https://www.scareguideline.com).The SCARE 2023 guidelines aim to update the Surgical Case Report (SCARE) guidelines, first published in 2016, to reflect current best practices and standards in surgery.
