The Stroop Color and Word Test

The Stroop Color and Word Test

12 April 2017 | Federica Scarpina and Sofia Tagini
The Stroop Color and Word Test (SCWT) is a neuropsychological test used to assess the ability to inhibit cognitive interference. This systematic review evaluates various scoring methods for the SCWT, aiming to determine their theoretical adequacy in measuring the Stroop effect. The study analyzed 44 articles, excluding those not relevant to the SCWT or not in English or Italian. It found that no scoring method fully captures the Stroop effect. Italian studies showed significant variation in scoring methods, with some focusing only on speed or accuracy. The authors propose a scoring method that considers both speed and accuracy to better assess inhibition. They emphasize the importance of evaluating performance in all SCWT conditions (word reading, color naming, named color-word). The review highlights the need for a unified scoring system that accounts for both accuracy and speed, as current methods are inconsistent and inadequate for clinical use. The study concludes that a more comprehensive scoring method is necessary to accurately interpret SCWT performance. The Stroop Color and Word Test (SCWT) is a neuropsychological test used to assess the ability to inhibit cognitive interference.
