The argument for near-term human disempowerment through AI

The argument for near-term human disempowerment through AI

14 April 2024 | Leonard Dung
This paper argues that AI will lead to the permanent disempowerment of humanity by 2100. The argument is based on four premises: (1) AI capable of disempowering humanity can be built by 2100; (2) if such AI can be built, it will be built; (3) if such AI is built, it will be misaligned; and (4) if misaligned AI is built, it will try to disempower humanity. The conclusion is that humanity will be permanently disempowered by 2100. The argument is supported by the rapid progress in AI capabilities, the incentives for developing powerful AI, the difficulty of aligning AI with human goals, and the instrumental convergence of goals that would benefit from disempowering humanity. The paper also addresses counterarguments, such as the possibility of economic disruptions or the difficulty of aligning AI, but concludes that these are unlikely to prevent the development of misaligned AI. The argument has significant moral and practical implications for the future of humanity. This paper argues that AI will lead to the permanent disempowerment of humanity by 2100.
