Online gambling has become a prominent phenomenon among students, seen as a fast way to earn money instantly and even becoming the primary source of income for some students to meet their daily needs. However, this phenomenon is considered detrimental to the future of Indonesia's youth, changing their mindset on earning a living and forming less productive personalities. Some students use their tuition fees to gamble without considering the risks, potentially threatening their ability to pay off educational costs. This research aims to identify the factors driving students to engage in online gambling, including social, economic, situational, learning environment, perception of winning, and perception of addiction. Secretive attitudes, difficulty accepting advice, stubbornness, and reluctance to admit or avoid potential dangers are obstacles in dealing with this phenomenon.
The study employs a qualitative method with in-depth literature analysis, utilizing sources such as books, journals, magazines, and other literature. The literature study process consists of four stages: preparing tools and equipment, preparing the working bibliography, setting time, and reading and noting materials. This method helps the researcher understand and learn relevant theories to address the research problem.
The research findings highlight that online gambling is widely considered illegal and is regulated by laws. Despite legal restrictions, the ease of access and the potential for financial gain attract many students. The study identifies several factors influencing gambling behavior, including social pressure, marketing strategies, media portrayal, and misconceptions about winning probabilities. Economic factors, such as low income and high needs, also play a significant role. The negative impacts of online gambling include financial loss, social isolation, and changes in values and behavior.
To address this issue, the study recommends comprehensive education on the risks of online gambling, the development of accessible counseling and psychological support services, and collaboration between educational institutions, families, and government agencies. Additionally, further research is suggested to deepen understanding of the factors influencing students' gambling tendencies and to evaluate the effectiveness of existing prevention programs.Online gambling has become a prominent phenomenon among students, seen as a fast way to earn money instantly and even becoming the primary source of income for some students to meet their daily needs.
