This study explores the mental toughness of student-athletes, a critical psychological factor influencing their performance in sports. Mental toughness is defined as the ability to maintain focus, control emotions, and persevere under pressure. The research involved 275 student-athletes from West Sumatra, with data collected using the Mental Toughness Scale. Results showed that the mental toughness of student-athletes was generally low, and there was no significant difference in mental toughness based on the athlete's competition level. However, it was expected that national-level athletes would have higher mental toughness due to increased competition experience. The study also found that mental toughness is positively correlated with emotional control, life control, and commitment, but not with emotional control or commitment. The findings suggest that mental toughness is an essential factor for student-athletes to achieve success in sports. The study recommends that the government collaborate with sports psychologists to improve mental health and well-being among student-athletes, which can help them perform better and achieve their goals. The study also highlights the importance of mental health education and support for student-athletes to reduce stress and stigma associated with mental health issues. Overall, the study emphasizes the need for further research on mental toughness in student-athletes to develop effective training programs and support systems. This study explores the mental toughness of student-athletes, a critical psychological factor influencing their performance in sports.
