Unveiling students' experiences and perceptions of Artificial Intelligence usage in higher education

Unveiling students' experiences and perceptions of Artificial Intelligence usage in higher education

2024 | Dr Xue Zhou, Dr Joanne Zhang, and Dr Ching Chan
This study explores how students in higher education use and perceive Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, particularly in the context of entrepreneurship education. Using a mixed-methods approach, including surveys and interviews, the research investigates students' utilization of AI, their perceived benefits and drawbacks, and the challenges they face in adopting AI. The findings reveal a diverse range of AI applications, highlighting benefits such as increased productivity, personalized learning, and enhanced linguistic capability. However, concerns regarding academic integrity, overreliance on AI, and the need for clear usage guidelines are also identified. The study contributes to the understanding of AI's role in higher education and provides empirical evidence of AI usage from students' perspectives. Students use AI tools for various purposes, including writing assistance, text summarization, market research, and advertising. AI is perceived as beneficial for improving productivity, personalized learning, idea generation, and linguistic capabilities. However, students also express concerns about the potential for AI to promote laziness, lack of accuracy, limited applicability in academic settings, data privacy issues, and limited awareness of AI. The study highlights the importance of balanced, informed, and ethical use of AI tools in higher education. It underscores the need for clear guidance and training on AI usage to ensure its effective and responsible integration into educational practices. The findings suggest that while AI can support self-directed learning, there are challenges in its adoption, including potential misuse, over-reliance, and the need for clear policies and guidelines. The study calls for further research to explore the broader implications of AI in higher education and to develop strategies for its effective integration. This study explores how students in higher education use and perceive Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, particularly in the context of entrepreneurship education.
