Value-Based Healthcare Delivery: A Scoping Review

Value-Based Healthcare Delivery: A Scoping Review

25 January 2024 | Mirian Fernández-Salido, Tamara Alhambra-Borrás, Georgia Casanova, and Jorge Garcés-Ferrer
This scoping review explores the key elements and outcomes of implementing value-based healthcare (VBHC) in healthcare systems. The review, conducted from 2013 to 2023, included 12 studies published in English and Spanish, focusing on VBHC definitions, implementation strategies, and outcomes. The studies highlight that VBHC emphasizes patient-centered care, with a focus on improving health outcomes while optimizing costs. Key elements identified include leadership, patient involvement, integrated care units, standardized outcome measures, and the use of information technology to support data accessibility and transparency. The review also notes that VBHC implementation can lead to improved coordination among healthcare professionals, better patient follow-up, and enhanced data quality. However, there is a lack of consensus on the definition and implementation of VBHC, leading to variations in how it is applied across different healthcare systems. The study concludes that VBHC has the potential to improve the efficiency and sustainability of healthcare systems, but further research is needed to address gaps in understanding and implementation. The findings suggest that a common conceptualization of VBHC is essential to reduce interpretive variability and ensure its successful application. This scoping review explores the key elements and outcomes of implementing value-based healthcare (VBHC) in healthcare systems.
